How to Convert Horsepower to Thrust

Horsepower is the rate of doing work. Its the amount of energy needed to raise a mass of 33000 lb to a height of 1 foot over a time of 1 minute.

Aeons ago a chap figured out this was the work an average horse was capable of!!

It’s lost in history but still used today. In metric units 1 horsepower = 0.746 kilowatts. Thrust is a force.

The force may be delivered at zero speed hence no horsepower is being developed e.g. aircraft about to move on a takeoff run. As the aircraft moves the thrust force than can be translated to horsepower.
