Commemorating the birth of Guru Gobind Singh, the tenth of the Sikh Gurus, Guru Gobind Singh Jayanti is celebrated all over the country. Guru Gobind Singh is noted for introducing the five K’s, the five articles of Sikhism. These are kesh (uncut hair), kara (a steel bracelet), kanga (a wooden comb), kaccha (cotton underwear), kirpan (steel sword).
Guru Gobind Singh Jayanti – How is it celebrated?
On the festival, Sikhs offer prayers for peace and prosperity and organise ‘Prabhat Pheris’, meaning small processions held in the morning. The devotees gather early morning and sing devotional songs or bhajans, which are complemented by the beats of dholak (a two-headed drum). The procession moves from house to house and one can see amazing displays of Sikh culture and martial arts. During this time, several stalls are put up that serve food and drinks, such as sweets and rose milk. Prayers are held at Gurudwaras that are decorated for the occasion. Most of them also organise langars or a community kitchen that serves delicious prashad (devotional offering). A popular offering at the Gurudwaras is the Kadha Prashad or a sweet halwa. There is a special way of eating it and it can only be accepted while one is sitting, with bowed head and cupped hands to signify humility and respect.
