US Obesity Rates are too high

The two non-profit organisations of the USA had recently published in their annual reports that the scary statistics of the level of Obesity in the USA can be stabilised.

Earlier statistics mentioned that one-third of American adults as Obese and one in every six children are now obese.

That’s obese- medically defined as having a body mass index (BMI), a measure of height to weight, that’s more than 30.
People are considered overweight when their BMI hits 25, and they are obese when it gets to 30.

The report released by Trust for America’s Health and Robert Wood Johnson Foundation found that West Virginia had the highest obesity rate at 37.7%.

The obesity rates remained stable in all the 45 states except 4 states where a growth was observed- Colorado, Minnesota,Washington and West Virginia.

The new reports on obesity shows progress in fighting the obesity epidemic.

This is first time in 14 years of conducting the annual report that any State’s rate dropped and rates in other states has gradually slowed down.

The trust for America’s Health projects that 44% of Americans will be obese by 2030.

Obesity is growing up fastly among the teens and there’s still no clarity about why obesity is continuing to worsen.

The obesity epidemic in the USA is 3 decades old and a huge investment was made in research on why obesity is continuing to increase.

The report noticed 25 states Having Obesity rates above 30%. In 2000 no state had above 25%.

The report also found that one in every four young adult who tried to join military were deemed ineligible due to lack of fitness.

“Obesity rates are still too high, but there’s a progress in the reduction in most of the states and its encouraging,” said Dr. Richard.E.Besser President and CEO of Robert Wood Johnson Foundation in a statement.

Some steps that can be taken to stabilise obesity amongst every individual whether an adult or a kid are:

  • Opting for healthy food with more of green veggies and fruits.
  • Drinking at least 4 litres of water everyday.
  • Avoiding to eat at the restaurants.
  • Encouraging wellness programs from time to time.
  • A a little work out at least a 20 minute walk can be beneficial in the long term run.

Obesity should be viewed as a complex problem since it has many reasons. One has to find out the reasons and accordingly work on it.
