Susan Shore who is the co-author of this study says,”When the main neurons in this region, called fusiform cells, become hyperactive and synchronize with one another, the phantom signal is transmitted into other centers where perception occurs.” He also tells that by stopping these kinds of signals they can easily stop the situation of tinnitus. To channelize their thinking the researchers created a gadget that measures the time of sound and skin stimulation that helps to target the nerve activity which creates this ringing in ears.
The author of the study writes,”The device plays a sound into the ears, alternating it with precisely timed, mild electrical pulses delivered to the cheek or neck. This sets off a process called stimulus timing-dependent plasticity, or STDP. The approach aims to reset the activity of fusiform cells.” The researchers then let 20 participants use the device from which 20 users get completely rid of the situation and other 11 notices a valuable change.
Shore tells that the positive results are now working as the motivation for them and they will keep working to make it more effective. The researcher said that they will try to make the device more effective so that it can cure the problem of its roots. It is calling to be a great development as this ringing in ears had become a point of disturbance for many.
