The recent report about breast cancer tells that women with normal BMI but high body fat are at higher risk for breast cancer. The data gets presented at the American Association for Cancer Research Special Conference Obesity and Canner which was held on 27 to 30th January. MD, a Medical oncologist at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center tells that it was not updated or know before that this cancer can get boosted with the increase of body fat in a woman’s body.
He says,”Our findings show that the risk of invasive breast cancer is increased in postmenopausal women with normal BMI and higher levels of body fat, meaning that a large proportion of the population has an unrecognized risk of developing cancer.” In BMI the body fat gets measured by the proportion of weight and height and it is also an easy method to mark the ideal percentage of body fat in someone’s body.
Well, BMI only tells about the estimated body fat in the body but not the exact level of body fat which can influence a number of disease at the same time. Thomas Rohan, MMBS, DHSc, MBBS and the professor of Department of Epidemiology and Population Health at Albert Einstein College of Medicine tells that BMI is not able to differentiate between the muscle mass and bone density as well.
MD and associate director of Cancer Prevention at the Sandra and Edward Meyer Cancer Center of Weill Cornell Medicine says,”These findings will probably be surprising to many doctors and patients alike, as BMI is the current standard method to assess the risks for diseases related to body weight.” He also tells that they hope that these finding can alert the women and will become a reason for them to choose a healthy way of lifestyle as well.
