In December, this year, the moon is going to reach the closest point of the Earth’s orbit.
In this December, we are going to have the brightest moon this year. It gets to the point that is closest to the Earth’s orbit. It is also known as cold moon that is to appear on 3rd of this December. This year, we already had three such moons but, all of them happened to be on full moon days. Due to shadows, we couldn’t see it clearly. So, this can be regarded as the first one that we can see clearly.
For moon to become a super-moon, it should be within 22,443 miles away from the Earth’s surface. This year, it is on 3rd of the December. They say that it will be the brightest at 4:47pm. They also say that it is going to lie a dazzling white as it reaches the centre of the sky in the night.
When moon is directly in between the Sun and the Earth, we call it a full moon that appears every 29.5 days. Every full moon has its own name. Specially, this moon is called ‘cold moon’ which represents the winter. It is often referred to as Yule as Christmas is just a few weeks ahead.
“If a full moon happens to occur when the moon is also at its closest point then it will look slightly larger and brighter than usual, popularly known as a super-moon. It is a natural part of the moon cycle and happens around once a year. The differences in apparent size and brightness amount to few percent but they can enhance the already beautiful sight of the full moon, making a super-moon worth looking up for,” says Dr Marek Kukula, the public astronomer at the royal observatory Greenwich.
An Astrologer, Richard Nolle first coined the word super-moon in 1979. It is given the name as it reaches the closest point of the Earth’s orbit. It actually occurs once in every 14 months. Previously, super-moons lead to weather disturbances such as tsunamis and one of them killed thousands of people in Indonesia. In 1974, on the day of Christmas, the super-moon lead to a cyclone. Experts say, its not going to harm this time and everything is going to be as usual.
