National Science Day 2020: All you need to know, How is CV Raman Connected with Science Day

National Science Day 2020: Every year National Science Day is celebrated on February 28th to honour the discovery of “Raman Effect.” This day is celebrated to commemorate the discovery of Raman Effect by great Indian Physicist Sir C. V Raman. It is on this day C. V Raman made an important discovery in the subject of Physics and won the noble prize for the same.

The government of India felicitates scientists who have contributed to the field of science every year.  This year, the National Science Day 2020 theme is going to be “Women in Science“. The Science Day 2020 will be celebrated on Feb 28th at Vigyan Bhawan, New Delhi. President Ram Nath Kovind will give prizes to Women Scientists on this day for their unprecedented contributions in the science field.

What is Raman Effect?

Raman found that a fraction of incident light is scattered when a light beam traverses through a dust-free, transparent sample of a chemical compound. While most of the scattered light has same wavelength, a part of it has different wavelength than the incident light. This feature is known as Raman Effect which was named after the renowned scientist Sir C.V Raman, the brain behind this discovery.

Going to the Roots

Dr. C.V. Raman declared it officially on Feb 28th that he discovered the Raman Effect. He was awarded Nobel Prize in Physics a couple of years later i.e. on 1930. To mark this discovery, National Council for Science and Technology Communication proposed the government to celebrate National Science Day every year on this day. The government of India accepted the proposal and started celebrating National Science Day from 1987.

As citizens of India, it is our responsibility to honor the great man for his invention, by contributing to the field of Science.
