Bangladesh: Government approves administrators for recovery of dues from top two telecom companies
  • Bangladesh government has approved the proposal to appoint administrators for recovery of dues from top two telecom companies of the country.
  • Government has approved the recommendation of the Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) to appoint administrators for Grammenphone (GP) and Robi for recovery of Tk 13,446 crore owed by these companies to the government.
  • The BTRC conducted two audits in 2016 to calculate the outstanding revenues of the operators.
  • Based on the audit report BTRC claims that GP owes it Taka 12,579 crore while Robi owes Taka 867.24 crore.
  • The dues include amounts accruing on account of dodging of revenue share, taxes and late fees accumulated until December 2014.
  • Earlier in September BTRC had issued a show-cause notice to the two companies for recovery of the dues giving 30 day deadline failing which their licenses were to be cancelled.
  • According to the BTRC, GP has 7.48 crore active connections while Robi has 4.77 crore connections accounting for close to 75 percent of all the mobile connections in Bangladesh.
  • In the meanwhile, on Thursday High Court in Dhaka issued an interim stay on the realization of Tk 12,579.95 crore from GP by BTRC for two months.

Turkey agrees to ceasefire in northern Syria
  • Turkey has agreed to a ceasefire in northern Syria to let Kurdish-led forces withdraw. The deal came after US Vice-President Mike Pence and Turkey’s President Recep Tayyip Erdogan met for talks in Ankara.
  • As per deal all fighting will be paused for five days, and the US will help facilitate the withdrawal of Kurdish-led troops from what Turkey terms a safe zone on the border, Mr Pence said.
  • Chief of the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces in a Kurdish TV interview said they would observe the agreement in the area between the border towns of Ras al-Ayn and Tal Abyad, where fighting has been fierce.
  • They have not discussed the fate of other areas referring to parts of the northeast where Turkey wants to create what it calls a safe zone.
  • Abdi urged Washington to guarantee the return of the displaced and ensure the region does not undergo demographic change as Turkey wants to create a buffer zone 30 kilometres deep on the Syrian side of the border, to keep Kurdish militias at bay and resettle some of the 3.6 million Syrian refugees living on its soil.

  • These companies have been given contracts worth five lakh crore rupees for the supply of defence equipment.

Karnataka tops first ever India Innovation Index launched by NITI Aayog
  • The first-ever India Innovation Index was launched by NITI Aayog in New Delhi in order to promote competitiveness among the states.
  • Karnataka has emerged the topper among major states.
  • Tamil Nadu is second and Maharashtra is on the third position followed by Telangana, Haryana, Kerala, Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal, Gujarat and Andhra Pradesh. Jharkhand finished last in the list of 17 major states.
  • Among the North-Eastern states, Sikkim and among Union Territories Delhi has occupied the top spot.
  • The aim of innovation index is to move states from competitive populism to competitive good governance.
  • Innovation index will continue to pursue such interventions that play an important role in developing cooperative and competitive federalism.

Dr. Jitendra Singh hails Ayushman Bharat- PMJAY as unique health scheme
  • Minister of State in Prime Minister’s Office Dr. Jitendra Singh has hailed the Ayushman Bharat – Pradhan Mantri Jan Aarogya Yojana as a unique and successful health insurance scheme.
  • Addressing the Asia Health-2019 conference in New Delhi, Dr Singh said, over 50 lakh people have been benefited from this scheme and the government is taking health-care protection to a new aspirational level.
  • It is the world’s largest government funded health-care programme targeting more than 50 crore beneficiaries.
  • Dr Singh suggested that in a heterogeneous and dynamic nation like India the fundamental priorities need to be considered while determining the spectrum of health care and disease.
  • India can not copy the West or other countries of the world in this connection.
  • Though India needs qualitative and quantitative changes in the health care sector.
  • Dr Singh also emphasized on the importance of human interface in the health care sector.

Government probing Flipkart and Amazon for alleged predatory pricing: Commerce Minister
  • The government is probing WalMart-owned Flipkart and Amazon over the alleged predatory pricing.
  • Stating that e-commerce companies have no right to sell products at discounts that will result in retail sector incurring major loss, these platforms are only allowed to connect potential sellers and buyers.
  • Stringent action will be taken, if there is violation of any law in letter or in spirit.
  • The matter comes after the Confederation of All India Traders had written to the Ministry seeking an audit into the business model of all e-commerce firms and the foreign-owned Amazon and Flipkart in particular.
  • The letter had asked the government to verify Amazon and Flipkart’s claims that individual brands are offering discounts and not them.
  • Mr. Goyal, who also holds the Railways portfolio, refuted rumours that the Railways might exit its ticketing arm IRCTC which had a stellar stock market debut earlier this week following a hugely successful IPO. Mr. Goyal said the government has no plan to fully sell IRCTC.

Despite IMF’s projections, India remains among fastest growing economies: Finance Minister

India remains among the fastest growing economies of the world and efforts are being made to make it grow faster.
International Monetary Fund (IMF) has projected a reduced growth rate for India, but the country’s economy is still growing as the fastest.
Mrs Sitharaman is certainly not risking a comparison with China, even though the two countries growth rates have been projected at 6.1 per cent in a latest IMF report.
The IMF in its latest projections reduced the growth rate for all the global economies. It reduced the growth for India too. But even with that India is still growing as the fastest growing economy.
As against India’s real growth rate of 6.8 per cent in 2018, the IMF in its latest World Economic Outlook released, projected the country’s growth rate at 6.1 per cent for 2019 and noted that the Indian economy is expected to pick up at 7 per cent in 2020.
Responding to a question on the status of the India-US trade deal currently been negotiated between the two countries she said there has been narrowing of trade differences between India and the US and hoped the two countries will be able to enter into a trade deal soon.

India urges Pakistan not to levy service fee on pilgrims to Kartarpur Corridor
  • India and Pakistan have reached an agreement on all other issues related to Kartarpur Sahib Corridor except the matter of service fee.
  • Islamabad is insisting on levying a fee of 20 dollar on all pilgrims and New Delhi has urged the neighbouring country not to do so in the interests of devotees and also because this is a people to people initiative.
  • The Kartarpur Sahib Corridor is an important people to people initiative taken by India to commemorate the 550th Birth Anniversary of Guru Nanak Devji.
  • The corridor will connect Darbar Sahib in KartarpurPakistan, with Dera Baba Nanak shrine in Gurdaspur district of Punjab.

  • The earlier records were of 177 strikes and 102 in female category respectively.

International level chess tournament inaugurated at the grounds of Koteshwara Karnataka Public School
  • International chess tournament for chess players whose FIDE rating is below 1600 was inaugurated on October 15, 2019 at the grounds of Koteshwara Karnataka Public School.
  • This tournament is organized by Kashvi Chess School (KCS).
  • The tournament ended on October 17, 2019.
  • The tournament was inaugurated by gold medal winner of Commonwealth Games of 2018, Shriyana S Mallya of Mangaluru.
