  • The Father of the Nation addressed the displaced people, who had temporarily settled at Kurukshetra in Haryana after partition.

BRICS trade ministers meeting begins in Brasilia

Ahead of upcoming BRICS 2019 summit, BRICS trade ministers meeting has started in Brasilia.

  • Commerce minister Piyush Goyal is leading the Indian delegation.
  • The meeting will focus on trade facilitation, investment promotion and cooperation in customs among other issues.
  • MoU on trade and investment promotion between agencies of all the 5 BRICS countries will be signed after the meeting.

550th birth anniversary of Guru Nanak Dev Ji

The 550th birth anniversary of first Sikh guru and founder of Sikhism Guru Nanak Dev is being celebrated as Prakash Parv.

  • Guru Nanak Dev Ji spent more than 15 years at Sultanpur Lodhi, where he attained enlightenment.
  • Union Information and Broadcasting Minister Prakash Javadekar will visit Huzoor Sahib Sachkhand Gurudwara in Nanded.
  • Nanded holds great significance for Sikhs. It was in Nanded that the Tenth Guru of Sikhs, Guru Gobind Singh Ji mandated that the Guru Granth Sahib will be the guiding light for the Sikhs like a true Guru in future.
  • Guru Nanak Dev was born on the full moon day of Kartik month in 1469.
  • Every year, the Prakash Parv is celebrated on the same day, also known as Kartik Poornima.

  • The proposed CNG port terminal will have an annual capacity of 6 million metric tones, which will increase the total handling capacity of the port to 9 million metric tones.

Manmohan Singh nominated to the parliamentary standing committee on finance

Rajya Sabha Chairman Venkaiah Naidu has nominated a former prime minister and senior Congress leader Manmohan Singh to the parliamentary standing committee on finance in place of party colleague Digvijaya Singh.

  • Digvijaya Singh has now been nominated to the parliamentary standing committee on urban development by the chairman of the Upper House.
  • Manmohan Singh, who was the country’s finance minister between 1991 and 1996, was a member of the panel from September 2014 to May 2019 before his tenure in the Upper House ended in June this year.
  • In August, he was elected unopposed to the Rajya Sabha from Rajasthan.

Shiv Sena MP Arvind Sawant resigned as the Union Minister for Heavy Industries and Public Enterprises in Narendra Modi’s cabinet.

  • This decision came after the fallout between Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Shiv Sena over the formation of Maharashtra government.
  • President Ram Nath Kovind has accepted the resignation of Arvind Ganpat Sawant from the Union Council of Ministers.

  • Shafali achieved the feat at 15 years and 285 days, surpassing batting legend Tendulkar, who had notched up his maiden Test fifty at 16 years and 214 days.

Saurabh Chaudhary claimed the silver medal in men’s 10m air pistol event to continue India’s surge at the 14th Asian Championship in Doha.

  • World Cup and Asian Games gold-medallist shot 244.5 to finish second on the podium behind North Korea’s Kim Song Guk, who won the top prize with a world record 246.5.
  • With 583, both Chaudhary and Abhishek Verma had qualified for the finals in seventh and sixth place.

Javelin thrower Sundar Singth wins gold in World Para Athletics Championships

Javelin thrower Sundar Singh Gurjar has won India’s second gold defending his World Para Athletics Championships title in the men’s F46 javelin throw event in Dubai.

  • With this, India has secured three Tokyo Paralympic Games quota, along with the bronze winner Ajeet Singh and Rinku.
  • Gurjar came up with his season’s best effort of 61.22m to claim the top spot.
  • India now has two gold, two silver and a bronze in the Championships.

France, Britain, Germany, EU ‘extremely concerned’ by Iran’s nuclear deal breach

  • France, Germany, Britain and the European Union have said they are “extremely concerned” by Iran’s decision to restart nuclear activities at one of its key sites. Iran is restarting uranium enrichment activities at the Fordow facility.
  • It was confirmed by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) in its report.
  • Iran’s action was “inconsistent” with the 2015 Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, or JCPoA, under which Tehran had agreed to curb some of its nuclear activities- notably uranium enrichment- in return for a lifting of economic sanctions.
  • The IAEA report confirmed that Iran has ramped up uranium enrichment, with its stockpile now reaching the equivalent of 551 kilograms, as opposed to the 300-kilogram limit laid down in the JCPoA.
Mexico offers asylum to former Bolivian President Evo Morales
  • Mexico has offered asylum to former Bolivian President Evo Morales, a day after he resigned following weeks of protest over a disputed election.
  • The decision was taken for “humanitarian reasons” after a request from Mr Morales. Morales, 60, had been in power since 2006.
  • Mr Morales, Bolivia’s first indigenous leader, stepped down after the head of the army publicly called on him to leave his post.
  • The deputy head of the Senate said she would take over as interim president until new elections were held.
  • Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump has hailed the resignation of Bolivia’s leftist leader Evo Morales as a sign to “illegitimate” regimes and praised the role of the country’s military.
Dhaka Global Dialogue 2019
  • Prime Minister of Bangladesh Sheikh Hasina on 11 November, 2019 inaugurated the first edition of the three day long Dhaka Global Dialogue. She said that friendship to all, malice to none is the main principle of Bangladesh’s foreign policy. Speaking about the importance of oceans Sheikh Hasina said that peace and stability in the maritime domain will be critical to Asia’s rise.
  • She said that due to its geographical location Bangladesh is a bridge between South Asia and South-East Asia.
  • She expressed the hope that the Dhaka Global Dialogue will act as a platform for the countries in this region on the way of achieving environmentally sustainable peace and prosperity.
  • The strategic location of the country gives it an advantage on which it needs to build further.
  • Bangladesh loses almost 2 percent of its GDP annually due to climate change issues but Bangladesh is an example of adaptive resilience which could be emulated by other countries in the world.
  • President of the ORF Samir Saran in his welcome address said that this is the Asian Century which will be shaped by stories of transformations in the east and its collective rise.
  • A large number of scholars, policy makers, strategic experts, law makers and industry leaders and professionals of various fields are participating in the event.
  • The three day long programme is being jointly organised by the Observer Research Foundation (ORF) and the Bangladesh Institute of International and Strategic Studies (BIISS).
  • Over 150 delegates from 50 countries are participating in the conference to discuss some of the most pressing global imperatives in the context of the Indo-pacific region.
Australia: New South Wales and Queensland declare state of emergency
  • In Australia, the states of New South Wales and Queensland have declared a state of emergency, following the widespread bush fires which took at least three lives.
  • Thousands have been displaced by three days of dangerous weather conditions and bring a catastrophic threat to heavily populated areas of the nation’s east.
  • More than 120 bush fires are burning across the two states.
  • The catastrophic warning is in place across the greater Sydney area and regions to the city’s north and south.
  • In New South Wales, the blazes have scorched 9,70,000 hectares of land and destroyed 150 houses.
  • Nine homes have been razed in Queensland.
  • New South Wales fire authorities have issued the maximum level of warning for the first time since new fire warnings were introduced a decade ago, after Australia’s deadly Black Saturday disaster.
