JEE Main Maths Study Tip 1: Work Smart

Smart work is as important as hard work. You may study all day but still not end up being productive. Why? This could be because your mind is not fresh all the time and needs breaks. If you push yourself to the limits and study one thing for the whole day, your efficiency will decrease gradually, and you may not be productive at all.

Ideally, you should take breaks while studying. Do not study one topic the whole day. Plan your study schedule. Also, you should give your mind and body a break from work and do some exercise or go out for a walk. Also, if you feel that you’re not able to study efficiently, consider taking a break.

JEE Main Maths Study Tip 2: Plan Each Day

Planning is as important as executing the plan. If you do not have a plan, you won’t know the direction to proceed in. Make a list of tasks that you’ll accomplish each day. The list can contain the topics that you have to study, the questions that you have to solve etc.

You should also make a tentative schedule for the day by deciding the amount of time that you will devote to each task on your to-do list. Try to stick to this schedule as much as you can, even if some days it doesn’t work out exactly the way you wanted it to.

JEE Main Maths Study Tip 3: Use the Right Books

There are many books for JEE Main mathematics preparation. However, the importance of choosing the right books cannot be emphasized enough. It is important to study from a book that explains the theory really well and solve problems from a book that has a collection of good quality problems.

If you’re solving problems from a good book, solve all the problems on that topic. Solving partial exercises from multiple books is highly discouraged. This is because you need to be exposed to the entire range of questions for that topic.

And only after you have solved all the topic questions from one book should you start solving questions on that topic from another book.

When you start a topic, firstly solve its problems from the NCERT mathematics book. This will serve two purposes. First, it will form the foundation for your JEE Main syllabus. Second, you’ll be preparing for your board exam at the same time as the JEE if you solve problems from the NCERT book.

Once you’re done, move on to solving topic problems from a JEE Main level book.

Below are some good JEE Main Mathematics books that you might want to give a try:

  • RD Sharma Mathematics for Class 11
  • RD Sharma Mathematics for Class 12
  • Arihant Differential Calculus
  • Arihant Integral Calculus
  • Arihant Algebra
  • Arihant Vector and 3D Geometry
  • Arihant Trigonometry
  • Coordinate Geometry for JEE Main & Advanced by S K Goyal
  • TMH Mathematics
  • IIT Mathematics for JEE Main and Advanced by ML Khanna

JEE Main Maths Study Tip 4: Solve Previous Years’ JEE Main Questions

Once you study a topic and practice its problems from a good book, you should try solving the questions that actually appeared in JEE Main exams in previous years. Solving past years’ questions is important as it would help you to get a flavor of the type and the difficulty level of the questions actually asked in the JEE Main exam.

JEE Main Maths Study Tip 5: Question-Solving Tips

I have mentioned some tips regarding question-solving for you below:

  • Solve at least 20 maths problems daily.
  • While solving problems, keep an eye on the clock. Try to solve each problem in a suitable time frame, and then try to reduce the time duration for further similar problems. This will help you increase your speed.
  • When you solve a problem, label it as ‘A’, ‘B’, or ‘C’. The label ‘A’ means that the problem is very simple and doesn’t need to be looked at the time of revision. The label ‘B’ means that you found the problem to be a bit hard but you could do it after putting in sufficient efforts. The label ‘C’ means that the problem was very challenging and couldn’t be solved by you. At the time of revision, first revise problems labeled ‘C’ and then the problems labeled ‘B’.
  • Solve the problems by thinking in a logical sequence. Discard any stray thoughts that come to your mind. Do not make any guesses, back them with logic.
  • Analyze your mistakes and don’t repeat them. Notice the topics that you find hard or slow you down. Focus more on these topics.
  • Do not quit till you have achieved your target for the day, i.e., you have solved all the questions that you had planned to solve on that day.
  • Don’t forget to use the JEE Main syllabus wisely to help you prepare.

JEE Main Maths Study Tip 6: Make Your Own Formula book

Make a notebook where you write down all the formulae that you come across during your JEE preparation. This formula book that you make is of great importance. Revise these formulae periodically, preferably every weekend. Although you may be overwhelmed by the sheer number of formulae in beginning, but if you do as I said above, you’ll become a master of these formulae!
