International Day of Solidarity with Palestinian People November 29

  • International Day of Solidarity with Palestinian People is observed on November 29 every year. The day is also known as Solidarity Day. The day marks the anniversary of resolution 181.

History:

  • In 1977, the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) passed a resolution 32/40 B and called for the observance of the International Day of Solidarity with Palestinian People. On 29 November 1947, the UNGA adopted the resolution on the partition of Palestine and passed resolution 181 (II) on the observance of the International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People.
  • On 1 December 2005, the Assembly requested the Committee on the Exercise of the Inalienable Rights of the Palestinian People and the Division for Palestinian Rights. It organized an annual exhibit on Palestinian rights or a cultural event in cooperation with the Permanent Observer Mission of Palestine to the UN.
  • The day encourages the Member States to continue to give the widest support and publicity to the observance of the Day of Solidarity.

CM Arvind Kejriwal flagged off 100 standard floor buses
  • The Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal flagged off 100 standard floor buses on 28 November.
  • The buses are equipped with CCTV cameras, GPS trackers, hydraulic lifts, and a panic button under the cluster scheme.
  • The addition of new buses is aimed to resolve the shortage of public transportation in the Capital.

Newly launched Buses:

  • Most of these buses run between Old Delhi Railway station and Nilothi, Bakoli Temple, Mubarakpur Dabas, Rohini Sector 23 and Lumpur Border.
  • Around 15 buses will operate on the route between Qutubgarh to Palika Kendra and 20 between Uttam Nagar and Delhi airport.
  • Delhi government also plans to add 473 new buses in the existing DTC bus fleet between January and May 2020.

DIMTS:

  • In 2019, the Delhi government has added 329 new standard floor buses to the existing fleet so far. The cluster bus fleet operated by the Delhi Integrated Multi-Modal System (DIMTS). With this introduction, the DIMTS will have 2,008 buses.
  • The move by the Delhi government is to make the public transport sector to become technologically advanced and be recognized internationally

M S Pawar commissioned Indian Navys sixth Dornier aircraft squadron
  • The Indian Navy has commissioned its sixth Dornier aircraft squadron in the Porbandar town of Gujarat by Deputy Chief of Naval Staff Vice-Admiral M S Pawar. It aims to give a fillip to coastal security near the sea border with Pakistan.

Dornier aircraft squadron:

  • The Indian Naval Air Squadron 314 is called Raptors.
  • It will operate with four newly-inducted, next-generation Dornier aircraft
  • Indian Naval Air Squadron (INAS) 314 marked yet another milestone in the efforts of India towards enhancing maritime security.
  • The Dornier will enhance the surveillance footprint in the North Arabian Sea.
  • The squadron will act as the first responder in this crucial region with respect to the strategic location.

Government to organize Ek Bharat Shreshta Bharat
  • The government is to organize a two-day Conference on Ek Bharat Shreshta Bharat form 30 November- 1 December 2019 at Jammu.
  • It will be inaugurated by Dr. Jitendra Singh, Minister of State (Independent charge) of the Ministry of DONER, Minister of State for PMO, Personnel, Public Grievances & Pensions; Atomic Energy & Space along with Shri G.C. Murmu, Lieutenant Governor of the Union Territory of Jammu & Kashmir, Shri R.B. Udhayakumar, Minister for Revenue & Disaster Management, Government of Tamil Nadu and Shri R.K. Mathur Lieutenant Governor of the Union Territory of Ladakh.

Birth centenary of Manna Dey observed in Dhaka
  • The Indira Gandhi Cultural Centre of the Indian High Commission observed the birth centenary of legendary singer Manna Dey in Dhaka on 29 November, 2019.
  • A musical tribute was paid to Manna Dey on the occasion. Dr. Amitabha Chanda along with Mridula Samadder and Samiul Islam Poluck enthralled the audience with the songs and narration from the biography of Manna Dey.
  • Deputy High Commissioner of India to Bangladesh Bishwadip Dey felicitated the artists after the event.
  • Manna Dey was born in Kolkata in 1919. His film career as the singer started in 1942 with the movie Tamanna. In his long musical career spanning over more than 5 decades, Manna Dey is credited with some of the most popular songs in films like Do Bigha Zamin, Awara, Mera Nam Joker, Bobby and Sholay among many others. In 2005 he was awarded the Padmabhushan. He received Dadasahab Phalke award in 2007. He passed away in 2013.

FASTag deadline extended to December 15
  • Union Government has extended the date for making FASTag mandatory for toll payments on National Highways to 15th December, 2019. The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways had earlier announced that from 1st of December, toll payments on highways would be accepted through FASTags only.
  • The Ministry in a statement said, to provide some more time to citizens to buy and put FASTag on their vehicles, it has now been decided that charging of double User Fee from vehicles which enter FASTag lane without FASTag will start from 15th of December this year.
  • In order to save fuel, time and pollution and to ensure seamless movement of traffic, the government has launched the National Electronic Toll Collection program which provides for the collection of user fee through FASTag. National Highways Authority of India, has equipped all Fee Plazas with Electronic Toll Collection System and to ease in availability of FASTag, it has also launched MyFASTag APP whereby all information regarding FASTag can be obtained.

Saudi Arabia, UAE plans refinery in Maharashtra

  • The United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia is planning to set up a refinery in Maharashtra, India.
  • The minimum estimated cost to set up the refinery is $70 billion. It exceeds the initial $44 billion estimate that was previously announced.
  • The meeting was held between the Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman and Abu Dhabi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan.

Refinery in Maharashtra:

  • The initiative was first announced in 2018. The aim is to develop the petrochemicals complex and refinery which would secure the supply of 600,000 barrels per day of Saudi and Emirati crude oil for India’s market.
  • It has been decided that the project would be run by a consortium that includes Saudi Aramco and Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC).

Hallmarking to be mandatory for gold jewellery from 2021: Ram Vilas Paswan
  • Hallmarking for Gold jewellery and artefacts will be mandatory from 15th January 2021.Consumer Affairs Minister Ram Vilas Paswan said, notification in this regard will be issued by 15 of January, 2020, giving a period of one year for implementation. He said, Jewellers and Retailers will get one year time for clearing their old or existing stock. Mr Paswan said, more than 26 thousand jewellers have taken the Bureau of Indian Standards, BIS (Hallmarking) registration till now.
  • Our correspondent reports that if anyone is found violating the set rules after 15th January 2021, they may attract a fine of minimum one lakh rupees or five times the value of the items or a jail term of one year.

India to announce LoC of Rs.3,230 crore to Sri Lanka
  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi has announced a line of credit of Rs.3,230 crore (approx) to Sri Lanka financial assistance and $50 million to fight terrorism.
  • The decision comes after the talks held between PM Modi and Sri Lanka’s newly elected President Gotabaya Rajapaksa.

Rajapaksa’s visit to India:

  • The newly elected Sri Lankan President Rajapaksa is on a three-day visit to India.
  • He held a discussion with Indian PM Narendra Modi. The talks focused on issues like fulfilling the aspirations of the Tamil community in Sri Lanka.
  • The talks aim to boost security, trade ties and address concerns of the fishermen.
  • The leaders also discussed to strengthen mutual cooperation in dealing with terrorism. The talks also focused on economic cooperation.
India, Japan to hold Foreign and Defence Ministerial Dialogue in New Delhi
  • Japanese Foreign Affairs Minister Toshimitsu Motegi and Japanese Defence Minister Taro Kono called on Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi this morning (30 November, 2019). The Japanese Ministers are on a day’s working visit to participate in 22 India-Japan Dialogue today. They will also meet External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar ahead of the dialogue.
  • The meeting will provide an opportunity for the two sides to further strengthening defence and security cooperation to provide greater depth to the India-Japan Special Strategic and Global Partnership. The two sides will also exchange views on the situation in the Indo-Pacific region and their efforts for achieving their shared objective of peace, prosperity and progress for a better future for the people of the two countries and the region.
  • The meeting is being held following the decision taken by Prime Minister Modi and Prime Minister Abe during the 13th India-Japan Annual Summit held in Japan in October 2018 to institute a Foreign and Defence Ministerial Dialogue for further deepening bilateral Security and Defence cooperation.
India to set up 12 hi-tech parks in Bangladesh
  • India will set up 12 hi-tech parks in Bangladesh at a cost of $193 million.
  • Speaking at a business meeting in Rangpur organised by the local Chamber of Commerce and Industry on 28 November, 2019, High Commissioner of India to Bangladesh Riva Ganguly Das said that these hi-tech parks will provide training to 30,000 youth of Bangladesh as skilled IT professionals.
  • She also inaugurated Swami Vivekananda Bhawan at Rangpur which houses a Computer Center, Charitable Medical Centre, Coaching centre and student’s home.

Centre to set up a new rocket launch pad at Kulasekarapattinam
  • The government of India is to set up a new rocket launch pad near Kulasekarapattinam in the State of Tamil Nadu.
  • It was announced by the Union Minister of Atomic Energy and Space, Dr. Jitendra Singh. The move is because of the increasing launches from India for both domestic and international customers.

Necessity:

  • Currently, the ISRO has two launch pads at SriharikotaAndhra Pradesh. The number of satellites launched every year by ISRO has increased over 30. In 2018 alone, ISRO has launched 17 missions. From the year 1994 to 2015ISRO’s PSLV has launched around 84 satellites.
  • Satish Dhawan Space CentreSHAR spaceport at Sriharikota, which is responsible for the integration of launchers, houses two operational launch pads.
  • The new launchpad will be used for future Indian rockets including small satellite launch vehicles, the Unified Modular Launch Vehicle, Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle Mk III, Avatar Reusable Launch Vehicle (Avatar RLV), Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV) and Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle (GSLV).

ISRO transferred space grade Li-Ion cell technology to BHEL
  • Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) transferred its indigenous technology to produce space-grade lithium-ion cells (Li-ion cells) to Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL) as per the TTA signed in March 2018.
  • BHEL is setting up the Li-Ion production facility near Bangalore in Karnataka. The announcement was given by the Union Minister of Atomic Energy and Space Dr. Jitendra Singh.

BHEL’s new facility:

  • BHEL has procured and commission the various equipments, both indigenous and imported, to establish the facility.
  • After the agreement, ISRO has provided all technical documentation that will be needed to establish the production plant and hands-on training in various production activities for BHEL staff at ISRO’s facilities.
  • As per the Technology Transfer Agreement, space-grade Li-Ion cells manufactured by BHEL are meant for meeting the national requirements only. However, BHEL can also sell the space-grade Li-Ion cells to parties outside India after obtaining prior written consent from ISRO.

Background:

  • In March 2018, BHEL signed the Technology Transfer Agreement (TTA) with ISRO to acquire the Li-ion Cell production technology. The TTA was signed at ISRO Headquarters, Bengaluru. The production facility will target to meet the Li-Ion Cell requirements for ISRO and other strategic sectors. With this TTA, BHEL can produce and sell Li-Ion cells to meet the other national and commercial applications by modifying the space-grade cell as per the requirement. It is expected that it can lead to cost reduction.

DAC approved weapons worth more than Rs.22,800 crore
  • The Defence Acquisition Council (DAC) chaired by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh approved procurements of anti-submarine P-8I aircraft, airborne warning aircraft, and thermal imaging sights for assault rifles worth more than Rs.22,800 crore on 28 November.

Aim:

  • The aim of the procurement is to promote defence services. The procurement will strengthen the Navy’s capabilities for Anti-Submarine Warfare (ASW)maritime coastal surveillance, and Anti-Surface Vessel (ASV) strike.

Other approvals:

  • DAC also approved the procurement of long-range Anti-submarine Warfare P-8I aircraft for the Navy.
  • DAC revalidated the Acceptance of Necessity for the procurement of additional Airborne Warning and Control System (AWACS) aircraft as a follow up to the indigenous Airborne Early Warning and Control (AEW&C) programme.

Implementation:

  • The mission system and sub-systems for these approved aircraft will be indigenously designed, developed and integrated into the main platform by Defence Research and Development Organization (DRDO).

Centre to set up Atal Innovation Mission (AIM)
  • The Government has set up the Atal Innovation Mission (AIM) at NITI Aayog. It encourages the schools to provide exposure to science and technology to students so that they can be acquainted with futuristic technology platforms.
  • It was announced by the Union Minister for Human Resource Development, Dr. Ramesh Pokhriyal ‘Nishank’.

Aim:

  • The main objective of establishing AIM is to create scientific character and innovative thoughts among the young minds of the country.
AIM-Atal Tinkering Laboratories:
  • AIM is to establish Atal Tinkering Laboratories (ATL) across the country for students between grade 6th to 12th
  • The lab will be equipped with the latest emerging technologies such as electronicsInternet of things (IoT), 3D printing, Robotics, etc.
  • In schools, AIM will facilitate to set up a network of ATL in India.

ATL:
ATL initiative aims to Cultivate 1 Million children in India as Neoteric Innovators. It aims to foster creativity, curiosity, and imagination in young minds and inculcate skills including computational thinking, design mind-set, adaptive learning, rapid calculations, physical computing, measurements, etc.
Implementation:

  • So far, ATL has selected 8878 schools and 4680 schools have been given the ATL grant in aid for the establishment of ATL.
  • The government has announced a total of Rs. 1000 crores for AIM up to the financial year 2019-20. There is no direct allocation of funds by AIM at a state and district level. The funds will be directly allocated by AIM to the beneficiaries and administered centrally.

Ekana Cricket Stadium became the second neutral venue in India to host a Test match
  • The Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Cricket Stadium in Lucknow became the second neutral venue in India to host a Test match.
  • Afghanistan and the West Indies are playing in a one-off Test at the stadium.
  • Rajiv Gandhi International Cricket Stadium in Dehradun became the first neutral venue to host a Test in the country. Afghanistan and the host Ireland for a one-off Test in March 2019.

Neutral venue:

  • Dubai International Cricket Stadium and Sheikh Zayed StadiumAbu Dhabi have played host to the maximum number of 13 neutral Tests so far.
  • It is followed by the Sharjah Cricket Stadium which hosted 9 matches and the Lord’s London which hosted two such Tests matches.
