JEE main and advanced, NEET, NET likely to be delayed further

With over 30 school education boards either yet to complete their board exams or postponing their evaluation process due to the lockdown, the results will be further delayed.

NEW DELHI: Competitive exams such as JEE main and advanced, NEET UG 2020, UGC-NET, among others which have already been postponed will be further delayed and likely to push the undergraduate and postgraduate admission schedule beyond July-August 2020, that too if the lockdown is lifted in May. This came after a number of state governments extended the lockdown for another fortnight, and with more states likely to follow suit.

With over 30 school education boards either yet to complete their board exams or postponing their evaluation process due to the lockdown, the results will be further delayed. The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE), National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS) and Council for the Indian School Certificate Examinations (CISCE) had to postpone their class X and XII exams, suspend their evaluation process and were supposed to take a call on April 15, post the 21-day lockdown. However, with some states already announcing the extension of period till the end of this month, sources said that boards will have to continue waiting till the lockdown is lifted.

According to a MHRD source, “Now the examinations will have to be further postponed. Earlier this month, CBSE had already decided to cut down the number of subjects for which class X and XII board exams are to be rescheduled.” CBSE announced that it will conduct exams for only 29 of the 41 pending subjects.
Under such a situation, according to a CBSE source, the board may even have to re-think the decision to conduct examination of even the 29 subjects.

“There are three options left with the board – first being to conduct the remaining examination and the evaluation process post the lockdown period, which will delay declaration of the results. The second option is to conduct the exams and evaluate the answer scripts if allowed during the lockdown, in which case we may be able to declare the results by June 2020. The third option is to start evaluation for which exams were already conducted, cancel the rest of the exams and evaluate them based on internal assessment. The schools have already submitted the internal assessment marks and those were already uploaded. So marks will be granted based on the internal assessment, in which case we will be able to declare the results by June.”

According to a senior government source, the MHRD is likely to request state governments and HEIs to advance their summer break and reopen as soon as the lockdown gets over to conduct the pending exams. During this time the institutions will be asked to conduct classes online and leave the practical part for the post lockdown period.

Summer break may be cut short; classes from late May

NEW DELHI: The Centre is likely to ask school education departments and higher education institutions to reschedule the academic calendar by advancing or curtailing the summer break in order to minimise loss of academic days in the 2020-12 session.
A panel under UGC is also likely to submit its recommendation to the ministry of human resource development (MHRD) Monday suggesting start of online classes for higher education institutions (HEIs) during lockdown and issuance of a guideline for pending semester/term-end exams.

According to a senior government source, the MHRD is likely to request the state governments and HEIs to advance or curtail their summer break and reopen as soon as the lockdown gets over and conduct the pending examinations.

“There is a possibility the lockdown period from April 1 will be considered the summer break. So probably by mid- or third week of May, academic activities may restart,” the official said.

During lockdown, the institutions will be asked to conduct classes online and leave the practical part for the post-lockdown period. While the option of conducting online examinations is also being looked at, public universities are learnt to have expressed their inability due to multiple factors.

20% Objective Type Questions: From Next Year, New Assessment Pattern For CBSE Exam
20% of questions in theory papers of objective type questions including multiple choice questions

New Delhi: From next academic year, Central Board of Secondary Education or CBSE, the national level board which regulates school education in the country, will be adopting a new pattern for examination assessment for classes 9 to 12. A significant change, according to a circular released by the Board in March-mid this year, will be a 20 per cent of questions in theory papers of objective type questions including multiple choice questions (MCQs). Same as, there will be 20 per cent and 10 per cent Case-based or Source-based integrated questions for classes 9-10 and 11-12 respectively from next year.
Remaining questions in all these annual examinations will be of short answer and long answer format.

Case-based or Source-based integrated questions were introduced in 2019-2020 year for classes 9 and 10, but the percentage share of this section was not introduced then.

Again, currently, the Board exams carry objective type questions, but the percentage or number of questions has not been prescribed.

From Next Year, New Assessment Pattern For CBSE Exam

According to a CBSE circular, the Board is initiating these changes in the examination and assessment practices for the year 2020-21 onwards as a follow up of adopting Learning Outcomes developed by NCERT and also part of Capacity Building Programmes for the year 2020.

The theme of the Capacity Building Programmes for the year 2020 is Competency Based Education.

“Competency Based Education (CBE) is an outcome based approach to schooling, where attainment of goals takes priority. Learning Outcomes (LOs) are defined in terms of competencies and capacities, which students acquire and demonstrate at the end of instructional programme,” the Board said in the circular.

“In CBE, explicitly defined learning outcomes guide instruction; instruction is more flexible, learner centric, learner-led and provides multiple opportunities for learning; and assessment is authentic and examines if the students are able to apply required concepts in real life situations,” it added.

“The overall marks and duration of examination shall remain same, change in the composition of assessment tasks would help us achieve the desired ends,” it said.

CISCE To Air Lessons On Television For ICSE, ISC Students During Lockdown

The Council for the Indian School Certificate Examination (CISCE) has decided to teach students through the television medium.

New Delhi: The Council for the Indian School Certificate Examination (CISCE) has decided to teach students through the television medium. The Council has entered into a partnership with the television channel, ABP Ananda and will begin teaching online classes. CISCE will be teaching English, mathematics, and Science to students in classes 9 to 12.
The introductory sessions were scheduled on April 11 and April 12 in the afternoon and if the initiative generates enough participation from students, more slots will be added in the future.

CISCE is not the only board to resort to non-conventional methods for teaching students in the lockdown. MHRD has been encouraging educational institutes to make use of SWAYAM portal and SWAYAM Prabha channels for teaching students. SWAYAM Prabha channels are available on Dish TV, Jio TV app, Airtel DTH, and Tata Sky.

Several state boards have launched their own apps or have partnered with ed-tech startups to deliver lessons to students while they are at home due to the lockdown.

With the possibility of lockdown extending further, and a long road to normalcy, the switch to digital modes of learning will only intensify. This, though, does not bode well for students who reside in remote areas with connectivity issues or simply do not have access to means for digital education.

The HRD Ministry, identifying the issues in online education, has recently begun a campaign to invite suggestions from all stakeholders on ways to improve digital education ecosystem including development of course content and delivery of course content.

Maharashtra SSC board exams for Geography & Work Experience cancelled

MUMBAI: In an unprecedented move, the Maharashtra State Board of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education has decided to cancel the pending Geography paper for over 17 lakh SSC (Class X) students. The education department has also announced that the second semester exams for classes IX and XI will not be conducted.

The education department had decided to postpone the last pending SSC paper after the number of Covid-19 cases rapidly increased in the state. The government was expected to give a new date after the lock down ended on April 14. Chief minister, Uddhav Thackeray however announced the extension of the lock down on Saturday.
In a video message, the school education minister, Varsha Gaikwad said, “The lock down was expected to end on April 14 but it has now been extended. Hence we have taken two decisions. The second semester exams for Class IX and XI will not be held and students must be promoted to the next classes on the basis of the first term exam and internal exam results. Similarly, we have also decided to cancel the pending Geography and pending vocational subjects papers for SSC students.”
The Geography paper was originally scheduled for March 23 and the vocational subjects were to be held between March 24 and April 4. The board authorities are however yet to work out an alternative marking scheme. “This hasn’t happened before. We have rules in place to mark smaller groups in case they can’t appear for an exam or their answer sheets are lost. We are working with the government to find the best solution,” said Shakuntala Kale, chairperson of the state board.

Several school principals and teachers group across the state had put forth this demand soon after the exam was postponed. Principals said there were several options available for the board. “The students are allowed to pick their best five scores out of six while applying for admissions. So for one year, the board could do away with the rule and score them only on five subjects. Since the students have already appeared for the history exam, the board can allow them to pass the group based on an average score,” said Sudam Kumbhar, principal, Shailendra Education Society, Dahisar. The Maharashtra State Junior College Teachers Association too had written to the government demanding the class XI exams be cancelled.

The only other board to cancel the class XII board examinations was International Baccalaureate (IB). The exams were scheduled from April 30 to May 22. The CBSE and ICSE had also postponed the pending class X and XII examination.

It will be held for free on the website www.bricsmath.com. Students from seven countries–Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa, Indonesia and Vietnam–can take part .

With an aim to develop students’ logical reasoning skills and cultivate their interest in math, the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has asked the affiliated schools to make students of classes 1 to 12 to participate in the BRICS Math Online Competition to be held from April 22 to May 22.

The competition will consist of 10 interactive math tasks, designed in a child-friendly game form. The tasks on logical and spatial thinking do not require any prior knowledge of math and will enable the students to think outside the box.

Over 11,431 students from Punjab participated in the competition last year. Of them, 3,365 got winner certificates, 4,329 bagged certificates of appreciation and 3,737 received participation certificates.

Paramjit Kaur, principal of BCM Arya Model Senior Secondary School, Shastri Nagar, said, “Our students had participated in the competition last year and even reached the next level. We will send the details of the competition on students’ profile on Monday so that those who are interested can participate.”

A Class 8 student, Gurjit Singh, said, “I had participated in the competition last year. The level was tough but I was able to reach the second round. This time, I will practice more to enter the third round.”

REGISTRATION PROCESS

All students must be registered by their parents or teachers, who will need to select the country, language and class to register themselves on the website and then add the students to the class list. Individual login and password credentials will then be generated for every participant to log into their profiles and solve the tasks.

The competition will be held in two rounds. In the first month, the trial round will be held, and the main round will be held in the next month. As students can take unlimited attempts in the trial round to solve the tasks, it will enable them to practice well for the main round. The results of the trial round will not affect the student’s entry into the main round.

However, students will have only one attempt to complete all tasks within 60 minutes in the main round.

Karnataka SSLC, PUC exams postponed due to coronavirus

Board exams for the secondary school leaving certificate (SSLC) and the pre-university course (PUC) have been postponed to May from April.

With the nationwide 21-day Covid-19 lockdown set to continue for another two weeks, Karnataka has postponed board exams for class 10 and one paper of class 12, state education minister S. Suresh Kumar said on Thursday.

“Board exams for the secondary school leaving certificate (SSLC) and the pre-university course (PUC) have been postponed to May from April, as the lockdown and restrictions on movement of people are likely to continue till this month-end to contain the coronavirus spread,” Kumar told reporters here.
