Trichomoniasis – Symptoms, Prevention, Diagnosis and treatment

Preventing And Treating Trichomoniasis.

Caused by a parasite known as trichomonas vaginalis, trichomoniasis is an infection which spreads predominantly via sexual intercourse. It is the most common sexually transmitted infection seen in women and also happens to be one of the most common sexually transmitted infections across the world. Humans are the only known hosts of the parasite trichomonas vaginalis. Women get easily infected through intercourse with an infected person. They can also get it through infected men who in turn get it from infected women.

Symptoms

Women with trichomoniasis may be asymptomatic or may have the following:

  • Yellow-green vaginal discharge.
  • Discharge associated with fishy odour.
  • Vulvar and vaginal irritation.

Men with trichomoniasis usually experience non-gonococcal urethritis but are mostly asymptomatic. It is recommended that one visit a doctor immediately it there is any unusual discharge from the vagina with irritation or urinary burning. The doctor will conduct an examination that will include a test for trichomoniasis. And this is done by a wet mount test. The doctor may also advise tests for other STDs.

Prevention

  • The surest way to prevent trichomoniasis is by avoiding multiple partners.
  • Using a condom during intercourse is also very helpful.
  • Discontinue sex and visit a doctor immediately, if you notice any unusual vaginal discharge or any burning sensation while passing urine.
  • Keep the genitals clean.

Treatment

  • Oral metronidazole or tinidazole is the treatment of choice.
  • The sex partner of the infected person should be treated as well.
  • Both partners should abstain from sex until treatment is complete.
  • Sexually active infected women have a high rate of getting re-infected so. re-screening must be done in three months’ time.

Trichomoniasis During Pregnancy

  • There are more chances of having a pre-term birth in women who have trichomoniasis during pregnancy as compared to uninfected women.
  • Premature rupture of membranes, low birth weight and intrauterine infections may also happen.
  • Trichomoniasis during pregnancy may also increase vertical transmission of HIV as it breaches the vaginal mucosa.

If you have trichomoniasis, get tested for other STDs as well and also, get your partner to have the tests done. Be open and honest with your partner about trichomoniasis and other STDs.
