A Modern Day Epidemic

Back pain has successfully gained a position in the category of epidemics, worldwide in the last two decades. Some statistics indicate its widespread incidence and prevalence. In fact, in the US, it is the second most common ailment after the common cold. Back pain is one of the most common reasons people go to the doctor or miss work and it is the most common cause of job-related disability. It is also responsible for the highest number of man hours lost in the industry.

Notably, on an average 80-85 per cent persons will suffer from a significant low back pain at some point of their lifetime, with 70 per cent of the sufferers expected to have a recurrence within one year of the initial episode.

Risk Factors

Sedentary Lifestyle: This is one of the two factors mainly responsible for the increased incidence of back pain. A sedentary lifestyle leads to a weak back and abdominal muscles which may not properly support the spine,

Improper Posture: An improper posture is another risk factor responsible for back pain reaching epidemic proportions. An improper posture leads to stress on the muscles and ligaments which in turn cannot support the back properly.

Obesity:  Too much weight can stress the back and cause pain. A diet high in calories and fat, combined with inactive lifestyle, can lead to weight gain and obesity.

Genetics: There is some evidence that certain types of spinal disorders have a genetic component. For example, degenerative disc disease seems to have an inherited component.
