The extensive use of gadgets affect our health and the eyes are one such organ which is the most affected with digital devices, Eye strain is one of the conditions which occurs due to continuous use of the eyes, either due to driving for long hours or due to staring at digital devices for long hours.
As the use of desktops and laptops have increased, eye strain has become one of the most common concerns of people who work at desks. However, eye strain Is not the only problem brought about by desktops or monitors, but some other conditions have also emerged, like tired eyes, short-sightedness, near-sightedness, dry eyes, headache, and sensitivity to bright light. These are either directly or indirectly linked to long and continuous working on laptops or desktops.

How Eye Exercises Help
These problems could be curbed with the practice of effective eye exercises. Current evidence also supports that eye exercises help maintain the current eyesight level and prevents further damage to the eyes. Practicing it in a proper manner will help to strengthen the muscles, improve movements of the eye, stimulate the eye centre in the brain, improve locus and relax the eye muscles too.
In case of amblyopia, vision therapy exercises help the brain to see through the amblyopic eye and to restore function. Recently, computer vision syndrome/digital eye syndrome has become very common due to spending long hours at desktops, laptops. tablets and mobile phones causing eye strain, red eyes, watery eyes and tired eyes. This condition affects around 50-80 per cent of computer users. Hence, eye exercises are recommended in some of the cases mentioned below:

Exercises For Eye Strain
The rapeutic eye exercises can be practiced for the ailments of eye strain as it helps to control eye movements and improves vision. Here are a few eye exercises:
Palming Your Eyes – Sit in a comfortable position. Rub your palms against each other and cover your eyes with the palm. Apply light pressure and hold, until there is complete blackness. Repeat the process 10 times.
Directional Eye Exercises – Directional eye exercise involves eye movements in different directions, like keeping your neck in a neutral position and moving the eye balls in an up and down direction, left and right direction and diagonal direction. Repeat each movement for ten times.
Focus Exercise – Sit in a comfortable position and place an object in front of your eye and focus on that object (pen or your thumb) for ten seconds and then relax. The distance at which the object is placed can be progressed from near to far or from tar to near. Repeat the same ten times.
Blinking – Blinking of your eyes as many times as possible is also a good exercise.
Rotation Exercise – This exercise involves rotating the eyes slowly in a clockwise manner and then in an anti-clockwise manner. Repeat the same, ten times.
Massage – Massaging the area around the eyes with your finger tips is also a good way to relax the eye muscles as well as to improve circulation.
The eye workout can begin and end with the palming exercise as a form of relaxation and cooling down.
Some precautions should be taken while working at computers, as this can help prevent further damage of the eyes. And here are some precautionary measures.
- Get your eyesight examined regularly
- Use computer glasses while working
- Use proper lighting in the surroundings
- Control and adjust the brightness and display of the gadget screen or use a glare filter over your computer screen
- Take frequent breaks like every 20-30 minutes
- Blink more often
- Use an ergonomically designed work station
- Practice exercise for your eyes regularly
